Budoshin Summer Camp 2009 took place 14 - 16 August 2009, at the North Oak Park Rec Center in Santa Clarita, CA. This is the annual intensive 3-day seminar certification and Master Training of black belts and students approaching black belt level in Budoshin Jujitsu. The camp is organized by Professor George Kirby, 10th Degree (Judan), and draws participants from Florida, Virginia, Washington State... all across the United States.

Topics Covered

August 14 :

1. Position, Position, Position - how to manage your attacker to your advantage (Taught by Professor Kirby).

2. Multiple Technique Flow - how to segue smoothly from one submission to another (Taught by Professor Kirby).

3. "Stealth Weapons" - legal-to-use, everyday objects that can be used as self-defense weapons (How about a handfull of plastic spoons? ...a roll of toilet paper? ...a towel? ...a bag of groceries? ...a ball-point pen? Taught by Professor Kirby).

4. Distance and Timing - how to control the tempo of a confrontation... and break it; how to "bait" and steer an attack to your advantage (Taught by Sensei Chris Hendricks).

August 15:

5. Applying Empty Hands Tech to Weapons (Taught by Professor Kirby).

6. Nage Footwork - the real differences between Judo and Jujitsu (Look for the "hole" in the attack. Taught by Sensei Marc Tucker).

7-8. Submissions and Groundwork, Parts I and II (We don't "do" competition-style ground-fighting - what we "do" is fast and dirty because the object is to STOP a fight as quickly as possible. Taught by Sensei Mark Jordan).

August 16:

9. "Cane-Jutsu" - self defense using a cane ("Well, he LOOKED like a frail old man..." Taught by Sensei Tony Damigo).

Social Events

These come with the gathering - we are a large extended family, after all. The evening of the 14th was spent at Vicenzo's Pizza Parlor in an enjoyable social event eating monster pizzas as guests of Sensei Kirby; After the testing on August 16, everyone reconvened at the Kabuki Restaurant in Newhall, CA, for what most people assumed would be a light lunch - but turned out to be a fabulous 6-course traditional Japanese meal:
